bulletin boards
7 things students want to know
1. Am I in the right room?
I will stand at the door everyday and call each student by name. For the first days I will have a list of the names and will check with them before they enter the classroom to make sure they are in the right class. I will also display a bulletin board outside of my classroom next to the door with my name, grade, and the names of my students. I will talk to the students briefly when they enter the classroom to make them feel welcome.
2. Where am I supposed to sit?
I will provide my students a number and sketch of where the desks are located with their name as soon as they walk in the classroom. I will point briefly to where they should start walking to. Their desk will have their name and number.
3. What are the rules of the classroom?
I will have the rules clearly posted on the wall so that all students can see. I will explain each rule and my expectations and reinforce and enforce them throughout the year. I will provide the students two copies of the rules, one for them to have in their folders and another to take to their parents to sign them and bring them back to me. They will also be posted on this website.
4. What will I be doing this year?
I will explain and give the students and parents a handout of what we will be learning in the classroom. I will spend the first three weeks teaching the students procedures of everything we will do in class so that lack of organization will not affect their learning. Examples of procedures would be participating in class, turning in homework, asking questions, going to the bathroom/lunch/break, how we will begin and end our day, etc.
5. How will I be graded?
I will provide an explanation of how tests, quizzes, homework and participation will be combined for a total grade and provide a handout in there folder. The first time I give out a particular type of assignment I will explain in detail and provide a rubric of what i will be looking for.
6. Who is the teacher as a person?
I will have a personality board in my classroom and tell a couple of stories and pictures about my family, culture, and myself. I will have certain objects for show and tell and will ask the students to do the same so that we can get to know each other. They will also share a story and photograph about themselves on the personality board.
7. Will the teacher treat me as a human being?
I will show my students respect at all times and I will listen to their questions, comments, and concerns. I will be organized and ready to teach everyday and I will follow the procedures, rules and consequences I taught them in a fair manner. I will be consistent and fair with all students and I will learn about them and their learning styles individually. I will make them feel welcome to come to me for any concerns they might have.
